Doing what is impossible in photography

Adidas briefed us on a video and stills project that would be impossible to capture using photography. We needed to produce fabric simulations and macro close ups of a moving product. Using 3D scanning techniques we were able to create a 100% accurate render of the shoe that guaranteed absolute realism.

The 3D scan captured texture of the sole, definition of the fabric and key technical features of the shoe. This was then used to produce a full CG video. Within the video ribbons were simulated together and reimported as Alembic sequences so we could adjust the timing and position. Materials were then applied with lighting to give the final effect.

Visual Method also produced a set of stills from the video and using the already modelled shoe. Using 3D the final images were able to be scaled to any size and reused across multiple channels.
